Pictures or mirrors could be added to the back side of the moving cabinets. These bookcases are held to the main cabinet by a brass piano hinge the full length of the cabinet. Each shelf is pocket screwed into the side verticals and the back. I make the back out of 1/2 Birch plywood finished on both sides. All exposed edges are edgebanded and sanded with real Birch or Maple veneer. It is rabbited into the verticals for strength. The bed is 1 1/2 deeper than normal to accomadate the handle. This model is stained cherry and has three coats of water based polyurethane. The width of the bed closed is 59 inches without crown moulding. "The minumum width to open and still being able to take the bed down is 83 inches." The total width of the unit open is 123 inches. Unfinished Birch Do-it-yourself kit .This is a complete unit.
This is absolutely the very best do-it-yourself kit on or off the Internet at this time. With eight years in the Murphy bed business, I have taken the best ideas off the net and from the company's I have worked for and came up with these beds. I have sold and installed over two hundred of these beds. I can give many references to the quality of this product. This is a high quality cabinet, hand crafted and sanded smooth. It comes with a simple mechanism that has been throughly tested and is quaranteed to be strong, sturdy and superior to all other mechanisms. I use nitrogen gas springs by Stabilus for the counter balance. They are mounted on ball studs for removal if need be, I have never had one that needed replacement.
There are two types of Murphy beds on the market today; the bifold door type and the panel type. The bifold door type sells generally for less and has a metal frame exclusive of the cabinet that has to be bolted to the floor. Most of there cabinets are made of melamine over particle board. The bifold doors over time go out of alignment and need to to be constantly adjusted, due to the weight the hinges need to carry.
The Panel bed is more of a piece of furniture, that can be moved around in the house after it is assembled. It is attached to the wall at the top with four 3 1/2 inch screws.,it is important that these hit the wall studs. The front of the Murphy bed becomes the doors and folds down with the mattress in it. The panel bed has no mechanical springs or flopping doors. We install two bullet latches in the upper top corners of the front face to lock and snap the bed in place when it is closed. There is a light constant pressure allowed to keep the door shut. We also install a 4 inch wood handle to the upper right and left corners of the bed face, this is an inconspicuous place yet very functional. We etch the front face so it appears to be four seperate doors. We also add a 3/4 inch by 3 1/4 inch by 65 inch trim board on the bottom and the top of the front face of the cabinet, this really makes the cabinet look great. (most competitors leave this out.)
We make our standard bed cabinets out of 3/4 inch Birch, Maple or Oak plywood[ "cabinet grade" higher grades available upon request] however. special orders can be made out of Cherry, Walnut. All exposed edges are edge banded with real wood and every exposed part is sanded with 220 grit sandpaper. The counter balance for the bed is two nitrogen gas cylinders pistons. These pistons are not subject to metal fatigue or catastrophic failier. The pistons are held in place by metal plates and pins, this allows you to change a piston fairly easily if it should become necessary. I have been told by engineers that these pistons should last 20 years with daily use. Most all degrading of these pistons is due to high temperature inside hatchback cars. All the metal parts are coated with three coats of paint. Metal plate are thru bolted to the bed frame and the side panels with furniture grade antique brass finish bolts(flat head). The hinge is a 5/8 inch metal rod welded to a metal plate and bolted and screwed to the side panel. We have a collar with a set screw for adjustment, this prevents the piston from pushing the side panel in and out. This also allows for a constant 3/16 inch exposure between the bed doors and the side panels. Variations of this system have been on the market for over 15 years however my system is an overall improvement of these other systems. The most distinguishing characteristic of my beds is the flip over leg. WE ARE NOW USING BLACK POWDER COATING ON ALL STEEL PARTS(as seen in the pictures). It works as a legs when the bed is down and when the bed is up it works to hold the mattress and bedding in place. The third use is to leave the leg out when you close the bed and you have a clothes hanger. The leg is in three parts the two legs and one cross bar, they are tightly bolted togethers they work as one unit. The flip over leg is rated to hold 1000 pounds.
No finish is applied to the wood on this unit. You will have to do yourself.it is not hard if you follow instructions or just paint it.Most people prefer two or three coats of water based polyurethane. For the best results all parts should be laid out on tables and a sealer coat is applied, after about an hour(dries to touch in 15 minutes,it is sanded with 220 grit sandpaper and then a second or final coat is applied, don't be afriend of putting it on a little heavy, it turns a little purple and seems to level itself. I use the Pro series for (Floors) offered by Home Depot, however Minwax makes a polycrylic that works great also, the only real trick is that if the parts are laying flat there is less chance of runs. If you do get a run you can sand it out and then buy a water based spray can to touch it up.
The wood parts are numbered [to match packing list] and predrilled. The 1x2 supports that become the bed frame need to be counter sunk by the installer. Here is a list of tools you will need: screw gun,#2 square drive bit 6 inches long, set of allen wrenches, two 7/16 inch wrench, stud finder, pliers, philips and regular screw drivers, liquid nails in pint tube, wood clamps 6 inch help. We include a pictorial assembly and installation manuel that is very comprehensive, plus you can call for personal attention if you are having difficulties. All wood parts are held together by square drive pocket screws. it is fairly easy to assemble if the instructions are followed in sequence. The queen size is 65 wide by 90 high by 15 1/4 [total of 16 with trim] inches deep, this cabinet will hold up to a 10 inch mattress. The bed folds out into the room 88 inches, the total weight of the bed is 200 pounds
This is one of the most useful products you will ever own if you are looking for more space in any room. The shipping cost is set at $179.00 in the contiguous US. There are three boxes of between 60-75 pounds each..Please add 5% for Oak because it weighs more and the material costs more. If you intend to paint it is best to use Birch because it has a tighter grain. Maple is offered at the $105.00 more than Birch is offered in cabinet grade, otherwise is comes in "A" grade for $200.00 more..
We are now offering some additional options:
1) 20 inch deep cabinet instead of the standard 15 inch deep, allows for a 4 inch ledge in the back(for alarm clock or whatever), this can come with a floating headboard (keeps pillows and stuff from falling down into the space between the bed and the wall behind also makes a great back board for reading.Cost $250.00 includes extra for shipping. 2) Two recessed 40 watt lights 3" diameter with on of switch.$125.00.includes shipping.3.) Floating headboard with hinges $70.00 includes shipping. We sell the standard bed retail for $2,200.00 plus delivery and installation in the local area. The pictures are of an oak unit with two coats of polyurethane(no stain) turns yellow/brown with just the polyurethane.
