This unit is made out of 3/4 inch cabinet grade Birch or Oak plywood, you can upgrade from there..It is all edge banded with Birch veneer. This is sold as an unfinished Birch kit, I also sell it with finished, please call/write for pricing. The size of this library bed is inches 88 3/8 wide[ inches at the base] by 87 3/4 inches high. This whole unit is pre-cut and drilled so all you have to do is assemble and install. The estimated time to paint or polyurethane is about 10 hours, the estimated time to assemble and install is 8 hours. The center bed cabinet is 15 1/4 deep by 85 high and 43 inches wide, the two sides are 12 inches deep by 22 inches wide by 85 inches high. The rolling cabinets are 9 inches deep by 22 inches wide by 82 1/2 inches high with 1/4 plywood backs rabbeted in place. We built this one, to make the least expensive Library bed without going to cheap material. No particle board in my products
We use a 11/16 steel continuous track on the base of the cabinet. This track can be painted to match the cabinet. We use six steel rollers with ball bearings per sliding cabinet, these are rated at 60 pound each, these rollers (wheels) are 1 3/16" diameter sheaves. [made in Michigan]. If you anticipate heavy books in excess of 240 pounds I can add more rollers. I mortice four of these wheels into the bottom of the rolling shelves. The upper track I mortice in two sheaves. The rolling shelves are inches wide by 9 inches deep. I rabbit out the back end of these vertical panels for the 1/4 plywood backs,. The full depth of the shelves for the rolling cabinets is 8 inches for books, and the side cabinets are 12 inches deep. I build a floor base for the whole unit x 17 3/4. On the very front end of the cabinet base runs a stainless steel track 5/16" high by 11/16" wide. This track and rollers are made to hold a total of 240 pounds. The same track runs at the very top of the bed, with trim covering it up. This makes the rolling shelves locked in place so they won't come off the track. If for some reason the shelf should become detached from the upper track I have installed a scalp or trim that comes down over the sheaves so as to block the cabinet from falling forward away from the wall. The scalp is attached to a piece of plywood with the track on it, it runs continuous across the front of the unit and is screwed into the top of the vertical panels and front braces with 1 5/8 screws.
This unit comes with 1/4 birch plywood backs on the rolling cabinets only. Offered are two 3 3/8 diameter black or brass lights centered in bed compartment with a quality on/off switch. You can pick up 2 pc's of pine plywood from Home Depot for the mattress foundation at about $25.00 or I will supply you with a hardboard and fabric fold out foundation for $120.00. This and the mattress are the only items not included in this kit. The metal frame is bolted to the cabinet base, the cabinet is only screwed to the wall at the top with 4 pc's 2-4 inch screws depending on your wall.
This unit seconds as an Entertainment Center, Gun Cabinet or Hidden Doorway cover or hide anything behind it.
I roll on the stain( I like the natural by min-wax) Pecan looks real good too(like a violin). Wipe off the stain with a cloth, wait 8 hours and put 2-3 coats Satin water based polyurethane, sand with 220 grit sandpaper between coats,I like the Pro Series sold at Home Depot and Zinzer sold at Lowes because it doesn't bubble up as much as the others and it is less expensive (as it is drying take the brush and lightly go over the surface to blow up those little bubbles.
Formaldehyde [reduced] plywood. [certificate available]
I carefully package this item up in about 7 packages of about 75 pounds and send them ground to your front door. I use 3/4 inch plywood on the ends and 1/4 inch plywood on the sides. This adds some cost to the item but almost reduces the damage to non-existent.
